*MOST IMPORTANT* Water your sod heavily, twice per day, for two weeks. Then water heavily once every morning for one week. Next, water heavily every other day for one week. Then taper down to infrequent, deep watering, to promote deep root growth.
Do not mow your new sod lawn until after 4 weeks from installation. Tall Fescue is a cool season grass that thrives when it is kept at a tall height. Mowing weekly at 4-5" will help shade the soil to promote horizontal growth, as well as preventing weed seeds from germinating.
Wait at least 6 weeks before applying any fertilizer to your new sod lawn. Use a slow-release fertilizer, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for the amount to apply. However, try to avoid applying fertilizer during the hot summer months.
Keep an eye out for weeds and remove them as soon as possible. Do not use any herbicides until your lawn has been established for at least 6 months, or you may risk stunting your sod root growth.
Test the soil pH and nutrient levels annually to ensure that your lawn has the proper nutrients it needs to thrive. Soil testing services are often provided by several places, including city/county soil testing labs, as well as university extension programs.
Water deeply & infrequently, mow regularly, fertilize as needed, remove weeds, apply fungicides in summer, aerate annually, and have your soil tested. Your soil sample will help indicate which nutrients you need to supplement.
